What is Social Studies?
“Teaching social studies
begins with a deep knowledge and understanding of the subject and its
unique goals.
Social studies programs prepare
students to identify, understand, and work to solve the
challenges facing
our diverse nation in an increasingly interdependent world. Education
for citizenship should help
students acquire and learn to
use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare
them to be competent and
responsible citizens throughout their lives. Competent and responsible
citizens are informed and
thoughtful,
participate in their communities, are involved politically, and exhibit
moral and civic virtues."

Studies Standards Strands
**Themes Activity

The Sioux Falls School District’s elementary
social studies curriculum is guided by the
South Dakota state standards.
These standards define for all students what they must know in the
following strands: US History, world history, geography, civics
(government), and economics.
The curriculum integrates a text with literature and other resources to
make learning more relevant and meaningful.

Einstein's 55 Minutes
Questioning Strategies
"If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution,"
Einstein said,
"I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask,
for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five
minutes."
An instructor who has mastered when and how to ask questions
can create learning situations that build confidence
for all of those groups while covering subject matter more efficiently.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
5 Step Blueprint for Designing Great Social Studies
Projects
by
Pat Fredshaw on
October
6, 2016
One of the
purposes of PBL is that students have
“real
world” experiences of self-directed inquiry, collaboration, and
communication – skills that will bode them well in the world of
work, so much of which today is project-based. |
A Paradigm Shift for Educators
It is difficult for educators, particularly those who have been in
their professions for years, to make the shift from being in control of
educational delivery to being more of a
facilitator of the
learning process. Being a facilitator means giving up total
control, and this is difficult for many. The resistance has meant that
technology has been slow to be implemented in the classroom; it has
meant that moving students toward self-direction has been slowed. But
three things must be remembered here:
- Students are far
more invested in their learning when they are in charge of it
and when they see value in learning independently.
- PBL means that
students will retain what they have learned far better and
will gain valuable experience in inquiry-based learning, rather than
contrived teacher-directed learning, which is not translatable to
the real world.
- PBL means that
students are far better prepared to enter the
new workforces of the 21st
century with both the hard and soft skills necessary to be
successful.

POVERTY IN AMERICA
Frontline - Poor Kids
53 minutes
Frontline spent months following young children in Iowa who are growing up
against the backdrop of their families' struggles against financial
ruin. At a time when one in five American kids live below the poverty
line. "Poor kids" is an intimate portrait of the economic crisis as it's
rarely seen, through the eyes of children.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Mentor Not Punish
1.
Rules: Establish and
teach classroom rules to communicate
expectations for behavior.
If possible, have the class help create the rules. |
2.
Routines: Build
structure and establish routines to help
guide students in a wide variety of situations. |
3.
Praise: Reinforce
positive behavior, using praise and other means.
"They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." |
4.
Misbehavior: Consistently impose consequences for
misbehavior.
BE CONSISTENT! |
5.
Engagement: Foster
and maintain student engagement by teaching interesting lessons
that include opportunities for active student participation. |
Teachers need to distinguish between rules and
procedures. There should be
less than 5 rules in a classroom which govern
behavior (e.g. respect others).
There can be many procedures (e.g. passing papers, using computers, turning
in homework) which should be taught as the need arises.
All rules and procedures should be reviewed throughout the year.
We
all forget sometimes. The review is as much for the teacher as it is for the students.

Convergent Learning
-
Flash cards, memorization, and drill learning are examples of
convergent teaching.
Convergent thinking involves the ability to bring concepts and
materials from a variety of sources to come up with the correct
answer.
This means information is provided in a clear and precise way,
encouraging learning in a direct path.
Divergent Learning
-
Learning through play, creative projects and imaginary play are
ways that encourage divergent thinking.
Teaching methods for divergent learning involve offering students
many ideas and solutions
for problems as well as encouraging children to find creative
ways to learn.
Divergent teaching encourages children to take risks, learn how
to be flexible and to use their imagination.

Webinar - The Highly Engaged Classroom | Presented by Margaret
McInteer
Novice and veteran teachers alike are always challenged with the goal of
keeping students engaged. This webinar, based on the book of the same
title, will review the research on classroom engagement and then provide
perspectives and strategies to help teacher meet these challenges. The
book, thus the Webinar, organizes the complex topic of engagement into
four critical areas:
- Student emotions (How do I feel/)
- Student interest (Am I interested?)
- Student perceptions of importance (Is this important?)
- Student perceptions of efficacy (Can I do this?)
Specific recommendations and resources will be offered in each of the
four areas. These will include strategies that could be applied
immediately as well as strategies that, when used over time, contribute
to the development of “highly engaged classrooms.” |
